The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2022, Guerlain turned to perfumer Delphine Jelk to reimagine Habit Rouge, the house's iconic men's fragrance. The house wanted something new, something that carried forward the spirit of the original without simply repeating it. L'Instinct was born from that ambition. The name says it all, this is the fragrance unleashed, running free, full of instinct and raw energy.
Jelk chose red rose as the heart, not as a concession to softness, but as a direct reference to Habit Rouge's name. The red coat. The fiery flower. It sits alongside hemp and mate absolute, giving the composition an herbal depth. The patchouli arrives in two qualities, heart and essence, giving the base a depth that shifts between crisp and dark depending on the hour. Leather and vanilla don't compete here. They coexist, the way a worn jacket and warm skin do.
The evolution
The opening hits fizzy and bright, grapefruit's citrus pop over bergamot's coolness. That fizz gives way as the green notes arrive: mate first, then hemp, vegetal and slightly bitter. The rose isn't delicate here. It pushes through like a red flare. Then the leather takes over, and the composition pivots hard toward chypre territory. Patchouli provides the earthy undercurrent while vanilla sweetens the drydown into something warm and inviting. The scent lingers on the skin, evolving gently as the hours pass.
Cultural impact
L'Instinct offers a different take on masculine fragrance. With green herbs and leather, it draws on materials with depth and character that feel both timeless and contemporary. The cannabis and mate notes give it a distinctive edge, while the overall composition speaks to those who appreciate fragrance with history and substance. It's a fragrance that stands apart, inviting wearers to explore something beyond the ordinary.
