The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Warm'n Spicy arrived in a cluster of new releases from ESSNCE, a house whose catalogue reads like a series of carefully composed moments. The composition is built around iris, one of the most recognizable and sought-after materials a nose can work with. Iris has long carried a reputation for rarity, both because of how it's cultivated and because of the patience required to coax its scent from the root. ESSNCE had previously explored gourmand territory and bright citrus compositions, work that established a fondness for sweetness but never limited the house to a single register. Warm'n Spicy pushes into something more floral, more powdery, more grown-up, without abandoning the warmth associated with those earlier compositions. The formula isn't overloaded.
The iris is the headline here, and it's worth pausing on why. Iris, also called orris, comes from the rhizome of the iris plant, dried for years before it releases its powdery, rooty, violet-adjacent scent. It's one of the most expensive natural materials in perfumery. The result on skin is a suede-like softness that gives the composition its texture. Pairing that iris with blackcurrant and pear up top creates a deliberate interplay. The cool sweetness of pear softens iris's austerity, while blackcurrant's tart edge keeps the fruit from going syrupy.
The evolution
On skin, Warm'n Spicy opens with a cold snap. Blackcurrant arrives like a tart, almost metallic burst, then pear softens the edges, sweet but not cloying. Pink pepper flickers behind both, a low current of heat that signals what's coming without fully arriving. The opening is almost entirely fruit, crisp and slightly sharp, with the pepper threading through like static. Then iris begins to assert its powdery texture, and the composition suddenly feels dressed up. Jasmine and orange blossom add a white-floral brightness that lifts the iris, keeping it from collapsing into pure suede. As the minutes pass, the fragrance builds real architecture, with the florals stacking against the fruit in a way that feels intentional and layered. By the time the florals have settled, the base takes over.
Cultural impact
Warm'n Spicy sits in a recognizable corner of the fragrance world, where warm florals meet gourmand sweetness, a space where Lancôme's La Vie est Belle is frequently mentioned as a point of reference. What separates it is the iris. The composition builds its structure around that note in a way that gives it a powdery depth, lending the fragrance a more sculpted feel compared to compositions that lean entirely on sweetness. The spiced-fruit opening and vanilla-tonka base make it wearable across occasions, but the iris keeps it from drifting into pure comfort territory.
