The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Bois Precieux Secret II arrived in 2017 as part of Eisenberg's Les Secrets collection. The brand positions it with a single, evocative phrase: between power and softness, a woody fragrance with enigmatic refinement. The name carries real weight. Bois Precieux means precious wood, and the composition commits to that promise without hesitation. Cedar sits at the center of the heart notes, flanked by patchouli, cypriol, and rose, while the base layers in everything from sandalwood to tobacco to frankincense. This isn't a minimalist composition. It's built to be discovered slowly, the way the entire Secrets series seems designed to unfold across the skin and through the hours. The richness feels intentional rather than excessive, a deliberate stacking of textures that asks for patience.
What makes the structure interesting is the density of the base against the restraint of the top. Four opening notes, saffron, bergamot, orange, pink pepper, set a relatively tight stage before the composition opens into a nine-note foundation. That ratio is unusual. The base does the heavy narrative lifting, with amber, benzoin, frankincense, musk, sandalwood, tobacco, tonka bean, vanilla, and vetiver working in concert. Each of those materials carries weight, and their interaction creates a layered warmth that grounds everything above it.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes are where the fragrance sets its terms. Saffron leads, with bergamot and orange doing their best to lighten the mood while pink pepper adds a controlled burn underneath. By the one-hour mark, the top has mostly dissolved into the heart, and cedar takes command alongside patchouli. The cypriol works quietly here, pulling the composition toward earth without letting it go muddy. Rose makes an appearance before the base settles in for the long haul. From the three-hour mark onward, tobacco and amber define the experience. The benzoin and frankincense create a church-like resonance, while tonka bean and vanilla smooth the rough edges into something genuinely warm. Musk and vetiver anchor everything close to skin. By hour six, the fragrance has become a second skin, a soft tobacco-amber veil that clings to clothes the next morning.
Cultural impact
Bois Precieux Secret II occupies a specific corner of the oriental woody category, the kind of fragrance that appeals to wearers who want richness without the aggressive sweetness common in the genre. It sits in conversation with compositions like Honour Man by Amouage and Naxos by Xerjoff, sharing their spice-forward openings and resinous bases. The shared DNA is unmistakable: a saffron-led introduction, a deep woody heart, and a base built around amber, tobacco, and incense materials. Where it differs is in its restraint, offering the same ingredient vocabulary as those reference points but in a more contained register.
