The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Young Dunes arrived in 2023 as a collaboration between D.S. & Durga and designer Todd Snyder, sold exclusively through Snyder's channels. It was composed by David Seth Moltz, the perfumer behind the brand, and pointed at the wild edges where beach grass bends against coastal wind. The name doesn't promise a postcard. It promises the part of the coast where the manicured beach gives way to something looser, taller, less touched. The opening carries that bright, salt-edged light you get from sun warming dry sand, with a green vegetal lift that reads like dune grass flexing in a steady onshore breeze. As it settles, warmer wood notes creep in, giving the composition a grounded, almost sun-baked skin quality that keeps the marine elements from feeling thin or synthetic.
What's interesting here is the restraint. Dune grass, suede, beach heather, sage, yellow iris, these are all quiet materials, and none of them compete for the spotlight. Most fragrances chase a single loud note. Young Dunes refuses to. It reads more like a landscape painting than a portrait, a series of textures at the same altitude, each one grounding the next. The suede at the base is what ties it together, giving all that herbal lightness something to stand on.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are a green slap of lemon verbena and citrus, lifted by the dry, almost briny character of beach heather. It's sharp and sunlit, the kind of opening that makes you sniff your wrist twice. By the thirty-minute mark, the verbena has burned off and sage steps forward, dusty and aromatic, with yellow iris adding a powdery, rooty quality underneath. The whole middle phase feels like crushed herbs in a linen pocket. Around the two-hour mark the dune grass arrives, dry and hay-like, and the suede starts warming up from below. What remains after five or six hours is a quiet skin scent, suede and musk, the memory of grass without the green itself. It doesn't shout on the way out. It just stays clean.
Cultural impact
As a Todd Snyder exclusive, Young Dunes reached wearers through a single retail channel rather than the broader department store distribution that handles most designer launches. That limited placement gives the release a quieter presence by default, with stock concentrated through Snyder's own channels and pop-ups. Within that context, the fragrance has carved out its own footing. The dune grass note sits at the center of the composition, treated with a dry, almost hay-like character that reads as vegetation rather than as a generic green accord.
