The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Fiery Leather & Rhubarb arrived in 2023 as part of Dossier's Genderless collection, a line built for people who'd rather skip the industry theater. The brand's whole reason for existing is the one thing most fragrance houses avoid: saying exactly what's in the bottle and charging a fair price for it. This particular launch takes that philosophy somewhere unexpected, pairing an ingredient most people associate with pie with a material that's spent centuries wrapped in luxury codes. Dossier doesn't do mystery for mystery's sake. They do compositions that earn their notes. The rhubarb opens tart and almost candied, a sharp green fruit snap that quickly surrenders to something warmer and animalic.
What makes this composition worth a second look is the rhubarb-leather axis. Rhubarb brings a sharp, almost vegetal tartness that most leather fragrances never touch. The black leather accord underneath isn't the heavy, saddle-soaked kind. It's a vegan formulation, which means the perfumer built the leather effect from aroma chemicals rather than birch tar or animal-derived bases. That opens up room for the rhubarb's acidity to do something unusual: cut through the warmth instead of getting buried by it. The nutmeg and melon soften the entry, geranium and rose keep the heart human, and saffron adds the flicker of heat the name promises.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes are all about tension. Rhubarb hits bright and almost sour, like biting into the raw stalk before sugar ever got involved. Melon rounds the edge, nutmeg adds a low warmth underneath, and the whole thing reads as cool-weather-fruit, not summer melon. It pulls you in, and it asks a question: how long will this sharpness last? By the 45-minute mark, the answer starts arriving. Rose and geranium take the center, and the rhubarb doesn't vanish, it threads through the florals like a current. The saffron shows up quietly, a dry heat, more pepper than spice. The leather is there now, not loud, but structural. This is where the fragrance stops performing and starts settling into something you'd actually wear to dinner. Six hours in, the base is doing the talking. Black leather and vetiver, dry and close to the skin, with just enough of the rhubarb's ghost to keep it from going heavy. It doesn't project much by then, which is the point.
Cultural impact
Dossier built its reputation on a simple premise: the informed buyer who wants good scent without paying for mystique. Fiery Leather & Rhubarb fits that brief by putting recognizable, well-chosen ingredients into a composition where nothing is hidden behind marketing. The scent opens with a bright burst of rhubarb, tart and green with a candied edge, before the leather arrives in full, bringing warmth, weight, and a faintly smoky undertone that lingers for hours. The two notes play off each other throughout the wear: the fruit keeps the leather from feeling heavy, and the leather keeps the rhubarb from feeling like a dessert.
