The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Dossier launched in 2019 with a clear premise: transparency in ingredients and pricing. Each fragrance is formulated in France and sold direct, cutting traditional markups. The aesthetic is minimal, the language stripped of pretension. Citrus Matcha was born from a simple brief: green tea, citrus, and something wearable. Not conceptual. Not precious. The kind of fragrance you reach for before walking out, not the kind you save for a reason. Dossier built Citrus Matcha around the intersection of tea culture and American street, a Japanese ceremonial discipline colliding with casual accessibility.
The note philosophy here prioritizes balance over statement. Bergamot and bitter orange provide the opening energy, fig and green tea offer the soft middle ground, and cedarwood with musk ensure the drydown feels worn rather than performed. Vetiver functions as the bridge between these phases, its earthiness anchoring the sweeter fig note while anticipating the woody cedarwood to come. The result is a fragrance that reads as cohesive rather than compartmentalized, each note chosen to serve the whole rather than demand individual attention.
The evolution
The opening hits first with bergamot and bitter orange, a bright citrus burst that establishes immediate freshness. Within the first quarter hour, fig enters the heart alongside green tea, the fig lending a subtle sweetness while green tea keeps things grounded in its bitter, vegetal nature. Vetiver arrives as the heart deepens, adding an earthy counterweight that prevents the composition from floating away into pure delicacy. By the drydown, cedarwood dominates with its dry, woody presence while musk lingers close to the skin, extending wear time without overwhelming the surrounding space. The arc moves from bright to quiet, energetic to settled.
Cultural impact
Citrus Matcha arrived as an accessible alternative to Le Labo's Thé Matcha 26, which launched in 2010. The two share a tea-forward character and a similar balance of green and woody notes. Dossier's version leans more into citrus and fig, with a lighter touch on the matcha. For consumers seeking the character of Thé Matcha 26 without the boutique price, it became a practical option.
