The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Baroque movement gave this fragrance its name and its character. In 2018, Michel Girard composed The One Baroque as a special collector's edition within D&G's The One line, luxury fragrance as statement piece. Peach, litchi, mandarin, and bergamot blossom open bright and fruity, then transition through a dense white floral heart before settling into warm amber, vanilla, and vetiver. It's ornamental by design.
The combination of peach and litchi creates an immediate sticky-sweet impression that could reads as bold, or jarring. But the heart is where this gets interesting. Lily-of-the-valley typically stays light and green; here it's anchored by jasmine, ylang-ylang, and broom, which push warmer and slightly indolic. The base, vetiver and moss, adds an earthy, almost bitter counter to the vanilla. This isn't just sweet. It's structured.
The evolution
Opens fruity-bright: peach and litchi over mandarin, with bergamot blossom keeping it from cloying. The first twenty minutes feel generous, almost shouty. Then the white florals take over, lily-of-the-valley, jasmine, ylang-ylang, settling into something lush and warm. The drydown shifts to amber, vanilla, and vetiver that stays close to the skin for hours. Vetiver and moss keep it from becoming purely sweet. Moderate sillage throughout. The next morning, a faint warmth remains.
Cultural impact
The One Baroque arrived in 2018 as a collector's edition within Dolce&Gabbana's prestigious The One line, embodying the house's baroque aesthetic through ornate presentation and decadent composition. The fragrance capitalized on the luxury market's appetite for limited releases and collector pieces, combining tactile visual appeal with its rich floral-fruity profile to target enthusiasts seeking both aesthetic and olfactory distinction within the brand's established DNA.
