The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2013, photographer Nigel Barker partnered with Demeter Fragrance Library to bottle New York the way his lens already had. Known for his work on America's Next Top Model and The Face, Barker brought his photographic eye into a trio of scents called the Nigel Barker Signature Collection: Times Square, Wall Street, and New York Nights. The collection drew inspiration from Nigel's photographs and the energy and infinite possibilities of New York City itself. Demeter, the house grounded in the wonderful scents surrounding us every day, gave his vision a structure. New York Nights is the result.
What makes this composition work isn't the tobacco alone, it's how the tobacco behaves. Demeter paired Tobacco Leaf with Black Vanilla Husk and Red Poppy, then grounded the whole thing in Ylang-Ylang and Vetiver. The result reads warmer and more floral than a traditional tobacco scent, an unexpected blend that treats each note as a contributing voice rather than a solo performer. The Black Vanilla Husk brings a darker, resinous sweetness, a richer take on vanilla that anchors the composition's quieter moments.
The evolution
On skin, the opening hits with a quick sweetness, almost like burnt sugar dissolving in dark rum, before the tobacco leaf cuts in and pulls everything toward something drier. Within the first 20 minutes the ylang-ylang blooms, giving the composition a creamy floral lift that softens the tobacco's bite. The red poppy arrives quietly, powdery and a little red-tinged, like the memory of lipstick on a glass. As the first hour folds into the second, the black vanilla husk takes over the warmth, and the vetiver at the base starts to sharpen the edges. By the third or fourth hour you're left with a close-wearing blend of vanilla and dry tobacco, with just enough vetiver to keep it from going gourmand. It doesn't project much past arm's length by then. What survives into the next morning on a scarf or collar is that husky vanilla-tobacco trace, quieter, almost smudged. Moderate sillage, moderate hours. The kind of scent that stays a secret rather than making one.
Cultural impact
New York Nights arrived in 2013 as part of photographer Nigel Barker's three-piece Signature Collection with Demeter, alongside Times Square and Wall Street. The collaboration drew from Barker's photographs of New York and the city's energy and infinite possibilities, turning visual impressions into olfactory compositions. Each of the three scents interprets a different facet of the city through its own blend of notes. New York Nights leans warm and intimate, a composition built around Tobacco Leaf, Black Vanilla Husk, Red Poppy, Ylang-Ylang, and Vetiver.
