The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Delphine Thierry set out to capture the Mediterranean shrub Cistus ladanifer, the plant that gives Ládano its name. Thierry imagined a scent that feels like a wool blanket draped over sun-warmed stone, drawing inspiration from the plant's tactile, fibrous texture. The perfumer selected materials that echo both the wildness of the shrub and the warmth of Mediterranean landscapes, with hawthorn and celery opening the composition before a honeyed heart and resinous drydown take hold. Ládano launched in 2025 as part of the D:SOL MMXVI collection, representing a departure toward darker, more complex territory.
Thierry's note philosophy here centers on contrast. Hawthorn and celery open with a green bitterness that prevents the heart from feeling predictable. Honey and vanilla arrive not as safe sweetness but as a counterweight to the opening's sharpness. In the drydown, labdanum becomes the material of intention, with civet providing animalic depth that feels raw rather than processed. Styrax and papyrus add smoky-paper texture that keeps the base from becoming purely resinous. The result is a fragrance built on opposing forces: bitter and sweet, green and amber, animal and botanical.
The evolution
The opening alone reveals Thierry's intent to subvert expectations. Hawthorn provides green bitterness while celery introduces a savory, almost vegetable-like quality that feels counterintuitive for a fragrance named after a resinous shrub. Cinnamon warms this beginning without softening it. The heart marks a deliberate shift toward approachability, with honey and vanilla creating a sweetness that feels indulgent rather than cloying. Immortelle adds a hay-like warmth while licorice threads through with subtle darkness. The drydown represents the fragrance's most striking phase, where labdanum takes command alongside civet and styrax to create something resinous, animalic, and deeply sensual. Papyrus contributes papery dryness that grounds the richness, leaving a trail that rewards close attention.
Cultural impact
Since its 2025 debut, Ládano has become a talking point among niche collectors for daring the inclusion of civet and papyrus in a Mediterranean‑styled fragrance. Wearers often remark that the scent feels like a quiet garden at dusk, setting it apart from the brand’s lighter, herb‑focused siblings. Its bold animalic base has sparked online debates, cementing its reputation as the most polarising yet beloved offering in the Alma Kollektion.
