The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Courrèges, the house founded on geometric silhouettes and futuristic vision in 1961, tasked Nicolas Beaulieu with a singular challenge: translate architectural minimalism into liquid form. L'Empreinte, launched in 2021, became the answer, a unisex chypre built not on abundance but on precision. Beaulieu understood that the house's clean lines and kinetic energy demanded a fragrance that moved with purpose, each note chosen for function rather than flourish. The result is a scent that behaves like the fashion it represents, rigorous and deliberate, refusing to shout.
The note selection in L'Empreinte is not decorative but structural. Artemisia and aldehydes establish the opening's sharp, precise character, providing the equivalent of a clean geometric line in fabric. Iris functions as the composition's core, its powdery quality echoing the minimalist restraint that defines the brand. Castoreum and oakmoss form the chypre backbone, their animalic and earthy tension creating the kind of depth that minimalism sometimes fears but here fully embraces. The woody triad of cedarwood, sandalwood, and patchouli grounds everything that came before, turning the fragrance's structure into something that feels physically present rather than merely conceptual.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with a brief, sharp intrusion of artemisia and bergamot, aldehydes catching the light like glass catching sun. Coriander and peach hover at the edges, subtle enough to feel like texture rather than addition. Within minutes the heart assembles: iris steps forward with quiet authority, joined by rose and jasmine in a floral arrangement that maintains composure at every turn. Melon keeps the heart cool and slightly aqueous, preventing any warmth from building prematurely. The drydown is where the real argument happens. Castoreum introduces a skeletal animalism, oakmoss provides the mossy earth that defines the chypre structure, and amber, cedarwood, patchouli, and sandalwood layer into a warm, woody conclusion that remains dry and precise rather than sweet or heavy. The entire arc reads like a sentence with a clear subject, verb, and object.
Cultural impact
Since its 2021 debut, L'Empreinte has been noted for its crisp modernity, often compared to the airy amber of Baccarat Rouge 540 (2015) and the clean marine vibe of Courrèges’ own Wild Ocean (2019). Wearers describe it as a minimalist statement piece, suitable for city life and creative workspaces. Its unisex appeal has sparked conversation on gender‑fluid fragrance trends, positioning it as a quiet but confident player in contemporary niche circles.
