The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Catharsis arrived in 2019 from Luca Maffei, the nose behind Coreterno's confrontational approach to fragrance. The name says everything, catharsis as release, as letting go of something that no longer fits. This was designed for the wearer who wants scent to function as a statement rather than a background player. Maffei built the composition around a progression that moves fast: top notes that arrive and dissolve almost immediately, a heart that dominates and reshapes the whole arc, and a base that stays for hours. It's a fragrance that performs differently on every wearer, partly because of the saffron and whiskey interaction, partly because oud reads differently on different skin. The goal was never comfort. Catharsis is about the moment a fragrance stops being polite.
The real move here is how the whiskey behaves. It's not a boozy float, it anchors the heart alongside saffron, creating a metallic shimmer that cuts through the floral. Ylang-ylang could easily dominate a composition like this, but Maffei keeps it restrained, letting rose carry the softer side of the heart while the whiskey and saffron do the actual work. The result is a middle stage that smells like nothing else in the Coreterno range, not punk, not underground, but genuinely unusual. Even people who find the opening too aggressive tend to come around once the drydown arrives and the oud settles into something warmer, less confrontational.
The evolution
The opening lands like a match struck in a cold room, heat before light. Nutmeg and clove arrive together, dense and immediate, with just enough neroli to prevent the whole thing from reading as pure aggression. As the top notes begin to fade, the saffron takes its place, sharp and metallic, pulling the composition in a different direction entirely. The whiskey doesn't announce itself, it waits, then arrives quietly, mixing with rose and ylang-ylang to create a heart that smells nothing like the opening suggested. The oud is patient. It doesn't dominate early. Instead, it builds in the background as the florals and spices do their work, eventually becoming the only thing left standing. The leather and cedar show up to reinforce the base, and together they keep the drydown close to the skin. On most skin types, longevity is substantial.
Cultural impact
Coreterno has carved out a unique space in the niche fragrance world with compositions that push boundaries and challenge conventions. Catharsis fits squarely into this tradition, offering a bold statement piece for those drawn to unconventional work. The brand's following spans fragrance collectors who appreciate distinctive artisanal approaches and those simply fascinated by theatrical presentation. Catharsis represents a commitment to creating work that doesn't apologize for its intensity or complexity.
