The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Rose And Me arrived in 2019 as a deliberate provocation. Luca Maffei composed it around a single idea: a rose that refuses to behave like a rose. Not the softened, romanticized version that fills convention halls and gift shops, a rose with an actual dark soul. The name itself is a statement. Rose and me. Rose and me, nothing more. The collaboration between geranium, jasmine, and saffron builds a heart that never goes sweet, while guaiac wood, styrax, patchouli, and musk anchor the composition in something earthy and enduring. Maffei understood that black rose doesn't need decoration. It needs conviction.
What makes this composition interesting is the way it refuses the expected sweetness of rose without removing the flower entirely. The geranium brings a green, slightly sharp counterpoint that keeps the rose honest. Jasmine deepens the floral structure without softening it. Saffron adds a dry, almost metallic spice that reads as warmth rather than sweetness, the kind that catches attention without asking for it. In the base, guaiac wood brings its characteristic smoky, slightly tar-like quality that elevates the rose into something darker and more complex. Styrax adds a balsamic resinous note that enriches the drydown. Patchouli grounds everything with its earthy, slightly animalic signature.
The evolution
The opening arrives immediately. Black rose doesn't wait or hesitate, it hits with an intensity that announces itself from the first spray. What strikes most wearers is the absence of sweetness. This isn't a rose that smells like a Valentine's bouquet. It smells like the petals after they've been pressed, dried, and left in a dark room. The geranium and jasmine emerge within the first several minutes, deepening the floral structure without softening it. Geranium adds a green, slightly sharp counterpoint. Jasmine brings its characteristic indolic richness. Saffron arrives to bridge the heart and base with a dry, peppery spice that keeps the composition from ever going soft. The drydown is where this fragrance earns its reputation. Guaiac wood takes the lead, bringing its smoky, almost leathery quality that reads as elegant rather than harsh. Patchouli grounds the composition with its earthy depth. Styrax adds a balsamic resinous note that enriches the final stages. Musk wraps everything in warmth, keeping the drydown intimate and close rather than projecting.
Cultural impact
Rose And Me occupies a specific space in niche perfumery, the rose that refuses to apologize. Where most contemporary roses lean toward polished sweetness, this one carries an edge. Wearers drawn to it tend to appreciate complexity over convention. The moderate sillage and extended longevity make it practical for both day and evening wear, though it particularly suits someone who wants something distinctive without broadcasting it.
