The beginning
Pure Platinum arrived as the newest entry in Coach's men's line, a collection of fragrances the American house has built steadily over the past decade and change. The composition draws on the brand's material-first identity, taking direct inspiration from Manhattan's dynamic skyline and the sleek, polished surfaces of the city. Advertising features singer-songwriter Omar Apollo, reinforcing a contemporary, expressive register that runs through the bottle's design and the campaign imagery. On skin, the opening reads bright and slightly green, with apple and mandarin giving it a crisp fruit lift that feels current without leaning into the overly sweet territory some modern men's scents fall into.
What's worth noticing is the pairing. Lavender and rum absolute share the same heart, a layered arrangement where moss and orange blossom add depth and texture between them. The rum absolute brings a boozy, almost spiced warmth that lifts the lavender out of its usual barbershop register and gives the whole composition a slightly decadent edge. The apple-mandarin top adds an unexpected fruit edge that keeps the opening from feeling too familiar, a bright citrus sparkle that softens the herbal sharpness of the lavender before it fully develops.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are bright and almost crystalline. Apple and mandarin hit fast, then lavender sharpens everything into that barbershop-clean snap. Don't expect the fruit to last. Around the twenty-minute mark the lavender warms, the apple softens, and rum absolute starts showing up underneath, bringing a brown-sugar gravity that shifts the mood from clean-cut to something closer to candlelit. This is the phase that carries the next few hours. Moss and orange blossom sit there at low volume, a green-floral murmur beneath the rum. By hour four the composition has mostly shed its aromatic top. What remains is a close, woody-amber skin scent: ambroxan doing its metallic-mineral thing, cedarwood giving it a dry backbone, labdanum adding a faint sticky warmth.
