The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2019, Celine returned to perfumery after an extraordinary 55-year silence. The last fragrance, Vent Fou, launched in 1964 under a very different incarnation of the house. Hedi Slimane, who joined as creative director in 2018, spearheaded the revival of haute parfumerie at the French fashion house. Cologne Française was conceived as part of a collection of eleven unisex fragrances, each drawing directly from French high perfumery traditions. The decision to make all scents unisex reflected a contemporary approach that looked beyond traditional gender marketing. Slimane designed these eleven scents as a cohesive wardrobe rather than a series of seasonal releases, each fragrance conceived as a complete composition to be worn and lived with.
The name itself is the statement: Cologne Française. Not a descriptor but a declaration of intent. The classical French cologne tradition, elevated to haute parfumerie. What makes this composition distinctive is its trompe l'oeil quality, deceptively simple on the surface, aristocratic in execution. The dissonant accords create a tension that rewards attention: the addictive mellowness of neroli against the sensuous bite of fig tree, then the elegance of a powdery orris veil against the tender patina of tree moss. It's a cologne that refuses to be a cologne. The drydown lingers close to the skin, evolving from fresh green to something deeper, more intimate, a patina rather than a statement.
The evolution
The opening announces itself with the addictive mellowness of neroli and the sensuous bite of fig tree. Bright. Green. Slightly bitter in the best way. Within minutes, the green bite softens and powdery orris emerges, elegant, almost aristocratic in its restraint. Tree moss settles into the base, adding an earthy tenderness that carries the next several hours. What surprises is how the composition shifts character without ever announcing the change. Neroli sweetness gives way to moss warmth. The sillage stays moderate throughout, close to the skin, intimate rather than assertive. On some skin, the drydown leans more powdery; on others, the moss and musk dominate. Either way, Cologne Française leaves a trace that lingers six to eight hours. The patina of French couture. Nothing more, nothing less.
Cultural impact
Cologne Française represents a deliberate return to the historic couturier parfumeur lineage, where the fashion designer serves as perfumer. The collection operates under the philosophy of French couture restraint refracted through rock-and-roll knowingness. The wearer understands that true luxury is a quiet act of self-possession, not declaration. It's part of a wardrobe approach rather than seasonal releases, eleven scents conceived as a complete olfactory collection to be worn and lived with.
