The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
CK One arrived in 1994 and rewrote the rules. One fragrance, shared between anyone who wanted it. No gender, no gatekeeping, no ceremony. Twenty-four years later, Calvin Klein brought back the name, this time under the creative direction of Raf Simons and his 205W39NYC collection. The Platinum Edition didn't try to recreate the original. It tried to understand what made it matter, then do it again. Perfumers Ilias Ermenidis and Pierre Negrin revisited the formula, working with aldehydes that give the scent its distinctive sparkle and lift, a crisp apple note that brings freshness without sweetness, cardamom that adds a subtle aromatic complexity, lavender that anchors the heart with clean herbal character, and vetiver that grounds everything in earthy depth.
The aldehydes are the tell. They bring a distinct sparkle that lifts the entire composition, giving the opening an effervescent quality that sets the tone for everything that follows. The apple note sits alongside this brightness, adding a crisp, fruity dimension that keeps the top notes from feeling heavy or static. The cardamom contributes an aromatic warmth that blends smoothly with the aldehydes and apple, creating a harmonious beginning. As the top notes settle, the heart opens with lavender taking prominence, its clean herbal character bringing structure and definition to the middle.
The evolution
The opening brings aldehydes first, bright and present, before the apple arrives to add crispness and freshness. The apple reads as clean and tart, and the cardamom follows, bringing aromatic balance to the top. As the fragrance develops, the lavender takes its place in the heart, herbal and assertive, with pink pepper adding a subtle spice that doesn't lean toward sweetness. Red cinnamon is present in the heart as well, providing warmth that threads through the middle notes. The base emerges as the heart begins to settle, with vetiver taking the lead and bringing earthy, grounded character. Cashmere wood follows, soft and enveloping, and amber adds a subtle warmth underneath that keeps the drydown close to the skin. The result is a fragrance that moves through its stages without sharp transitions, each phase flowing naturally into the next.
Cultural impact
CK One introduced a fragrance concept in 1994 that challenged established categories by presenting one scent for any wearer. The brand's approach to fragrance has consistently reflected this inclusive philosophy. When Raf Simons took on creative direction, he brought his vision for a stripped-down aesthetic to the collection. The 205W39NYC collection represented a specific creative direction for the house. The Platinum Edition represents a continuation of the conversation CK One started, applying the same principles to a new expression of the original concept.
