The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
La Selle entered the world in 2016 as part of Byredo's Night Veils collection, a trio of high-concentration leather extracts, each honoring a different facet of the leatherworker's art. The glovemaker. The bootmaker. The saddler. This is the saddler's story. The name evokes the saddle, that essential bridge between horse and rider, the point where two worlds meet. The composition was conceived to capture the dynamic energy of equestrian tradition, not the formality of it, but the life underneath. The leather unfolds with presence and weight, grounded in the craft of the saddler's trade, where function and heritage intersect in every stitch.
What makes La Selle distinctive is its refusal to stay still. The cashmeran opens soft and warm, a plush cashmere-like presence that settles gently against the skin. Black tea cuts through immediately with a dry character that sets the tone, cutting through the softness with clarity. Leather arrives bold and stays bold through the heart, commanding attention without apology. Tobacco leaf gives it a different kind of weight, more aromatic than animalic, adding complexity to the composition.
The evolution
La Selle opens cool and composed. The cashmeran is soft and warm, almost powdery, but the black tea arrives quickly and resets the composition. Dry. Almost mineral. Then the leather takes over, and it's the real thing: worn leather, not dressed leather. The kind that's been outside, handled, broken in. Tobacco leaf slides underneath and adds a quiet aromatic sweetness that keeps the leather from feeling harsh. The base is where it earns the Night Veils name. Birch smoke rises and lingers, oakmoss deepens everything into a mossy darkness, and the combination holds close to the skin. On skin, it becomes a second layer.
Cultural impact
La Selle is the most dynamic of the Night Veils leather trio. Its character leans smoky and sombre, drawing wearers who appreciate leather that doesn't perform, leather that simply exists with quiet confidence. In a landscape of versatile fragrances, La Selle occupies a specific register: distinguished and unapologetic.
