The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Michał Gilbert Lach founded BOHOBOCO in Warsaw in 2016 after leaving fashion, bringing the same confrontational instinct to perfumery that had defined his earlier work. Rather than chase trend or palatability, Lach builds fragrance around materials that most houses avoid: gasoline, rubber, raw animalics. Dark Vinyl Musk continues this philosophy by centering leather and vinyl, materials associated with subculture and physical sensation rather than conventional beauty. The official description frames the fragrance as the quintessence of life, a metaphor for beautiful and difficult moments that build us. This is not marketing language in the typical sense. It reads as a genuine statement about what Lach believes fragrance can do.
The note selection in Dark Vinyl Musk reflects a philosophy about contrast and material honesty. Labdanum appears twice, in the opening and drydown, because Lach believes the material deserves to be heard at multiple stages rather than buried in the base. Rose functions as a bridge between the confrontational materials, providing just enough softness to make the frankincense and leather accessible without diluting them. The combination of styrax and balsamic notes creates a specific aromatic effect: smoky without being purely smoky, sweet without being cloying. Leather and musk anchor the composition because they represent the most honest expression of the fragrance's theme.
The evolution
The journey of Dark Vinyl Musk moves from warm-resinous sweetness into smoke and sacred wood before settling into animalic warmth. The opening introduces labdanum and rose as a deceptive softness, a false gentleness that immediately signals complexity. Sandalwood bridges the opening and heart, its creamy wood preventing the transition from feeling jarring. The heart arrives with frankincense and styrax, materials that shift the fragrance into a more serious register. Balsamic notes add depth without brightness, keeping the heart grounded rather than delicate. The drydown reintroduces amber and labdanum, creating a circular structure where the opening's resinous quality returns but now sits atop leathery notes and musk that transform its meaning. What began as warm sweetness becomes a statement about persistence and physical presence.
Cultural impact
Dark Vinyl Musk arrived in 2021, bringing vinyl-note leather into the foreground of a fragrance composition. Leather notes have long played supporting roles in perfumery. BOHOBOCO's approach treats this material differently, using the vinyl-note leather as a structural element rather than a simple accent. The fragrance speaks to a particular sensibility in niche perfumery where unexpected materials become the signature rather than the novelty. Its 2021 release found an audience among those drawn to scents that embrace unconventional inspiration while maintaining wearability.
