The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Perfumer Miguel Matos drew inspiration from the mythic orchards of ancient Crete, where fruit ripened in relentless Mediterranean sun and legends grew as thick as the trees. For Astrophil & Stella, Matos set out to bottle the sensory memory of walking through sun-drenched groves, fruit heavy on the branch, air warm and fragrant. Sweet Pulp represents a collaboration between the Italian house and a Portuguese perfumer, a meeting of sensibilities that favors precision over nostalgia, translating a mythological landscape into a wearable composition that feels both ancient and immediate.
The note selection for Sweet Pulp reflects a philosophy of contrast and complement. Orange and Peach share a warm, sunny disposition that makes them natural allies, while Bergamot and Petitgrain introduce the green, slightly bitter dimension that prevents the composition from becoming saccharine. The Rose-Fig pairing in the heart is deliberate: Rose offers softness and tradition, while Fig brings modernity and a slightly animalic creaminess that keeps the heart from feeling merely pretty.
The evolution
The fragrance begins in bright sunlight, Orange and Bergamot hitting first with crisp, sparkling energy, Peach and Pear flooding in immediately after to establish the juicy character that names the scent. Petitgrain arrives as a subtle green counterpoint, keeping the opening grounded and preventing it from floating into pure sweetness. As the first twenty minutes pass, the citrus retreats and Rose unfurls, bringing a quiet floral warmth that steadies the composition. Fig follows, its lactonic quality adding depth and a certain creamy richness that suggests the fruit's white flesh. The drydown anchors the journey in amber, sugar, and wood. Vanilla and Sugar create a confectionary softness while Patchouli and Oakmoss introduce an earthy, slightly feral element that prevents the base from reading as purely dessert-like. Sandalwood bridges the floral heart and woody base, and Ambergris adds a final marine-sweet nuance that lingers on skin for hours, the final message of an olfactive story that began in a Cretan orchard and ends somewhere between skin and memory.
Cultural impact
Since its 2023 debut, Sweet Pulp has been praised for its balanced sweet‑fruit profile that avoids cloying gourmand excess. Wearers note its versatility across seasons and settings, often comparing its bright opening to V/ Visa (2022) while highlighting its unique fig‑rose heart. The fragrance has become a go‑to for those seeking a sunny yet sophisticated scent that transitions from daytime errands to evening gatherings without losing its character.
