The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Arts&Scents, a German boutique founded in 2010, treats each fragrance as a miniature art piece rather than a commercial product. Their studio approach means small batches and meticulous attention to raw materials. For Fantastic Green Bird, they approached perfumer Manuela Pfannes-Völkel with a fragment of an unlikely sensory memory as the starting point, asking her to translate that abstract nostalgia into liquid form.
The note selection for Fantastic Green Bird reflects a philosophy of controlled contrast. Tequila and artemisia are not commonly paired in perfumery, yet both share a bitter, almost bracing quality that creates internal consistency across the fragrance's three acts. Agave and aloe reinforce the green succulent angle, while lemon verbena prevents the opening from becoming too heavy. In the heart, the hyacinth-honeysuckle-jasmine combination creates a classic white floral triad, but Arts&Scents chose hyacinth specifically for its green, slightly wild edge rather than pure floral sweetness.
The evolution
The opening notes immediately announce that this is not polite fragrance territory. Tequila arrives with its characteristic burn, immediately joined by agave and aloe in a combination that reads green and almost sticky. Lemon verbena sharpens the top, preventing the opening from feeling heavy. As time passes, the heart notes take over the narrative. Hyacinth is unapologetically bold, almost head-shop in its green floral intensity, while honeysuckle and jasmine weave around it with contrasting sweetness. The transition to the drydown feels like watching a garden go twilight. Artemisia's bitter, slightly medicinal quality provides an unexpected counterpoint to the lush floral heart, and amber and sandalwood introduce warmth and texture that keep the drydown feeling intimate rather than austere.
Cultural impact
Since its 2014 debut, Fantastic Green Bird has become a cult favourite among collectors who crave a green Chypre that breaks the mold with tequila’s unexpected bite. Its daring opening sparked lively discussions on niche forums, positioning it as a statement scent for those who enjoy bold, botanical twists. The fragrance is often cited as a go‑to for spring outings and creative work environments, reinforcing Arts&Scents’ reputation for inventive storytelling.
