The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Primero Marocaine landed in 2021 from ArteOlfatto, a house that built its reputation on memory captured in scent. The composition reads like a postcard from a spice market after the sun drops below the rooftops, where saffron threads glint against open sacks, hashish resin sits in dark clumps beside the tobacco leaves, and warm leather hangs in rolls from brass hooks nearby. The name Primero Marocaine signals exactly that Moroccan-forward approach, and the formula delivers on the promise. Saffron threads, hashish resin, tobacco leaf, and warm leather lead the charge, with cedar and patchouli anchoring the base and giving the whole structure something solid to stand on.
The interesting choice here is putting Moroccan hashish into the top notes alongside saffron, cinnamon, nutmeg, and tobacco. Most spicy orientals in the current market reach for oud or amber as the opening move. Hashish brings a dried-leaf, almost smoked-tea warmth that reads herbal rather than purely resinous, and that single substitution changes the entire personality of the composition. Paired with the leather, guaiac wood, and tonka bean in the base, the composition sits in a specific register. Woody, leathery, semi-gourmand, but arid.
The evolution
The opening hits the skin in a dense, smoky-spiced cloud. Saffron, cinnamon, nutmeg, and the hashish accord arrive together, creating a warm, almost confrontational rush of aroma that announces itself before you've even left the room. The tobacco soon rounds out the edges, and the cedarwood and patchouli start to build the middle structure. This is where the composition finds its footing. The heart phase is the longest stretch of the wear, with vetiver adding a dry earthiness that keeps the warmth from feeling sticky or cloying. Leather, guaiac wood, sandalwood, amber, tonka bean, and vanilla settle into a slow, resinous drydown as the base notes take over. Longevity is rated above average, and the sillage is solid, holding close to the skin rather than filling every corner of a room.
Cultural impact
Wearers describe Primero Marocaine as the scent of someone who walks into a room already in conversation, not the one who needs to start one. The tobacco-hashish opening does the heavy lifting, and the leather base gives it enough structure to carry through a long evening without losing its shape. The composition sits in a small category of releases that reach for Moroccan ingredient traditions, and it does so without defaulting to the oud templates that define much of the oriental market.
