The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The number in the name isn't a year on a calendar. It's a feeling. The 1990s were loud and fragile at once, and that tension is what this scent tries to bottle. Arte Olfatto's 2025 Capsule collection translates that decade into a Woody Chypre composition, the contradiction between fragility and strength, between surface and underneath. Released under the Capsule umbrella, a series from the brand, this composition holds two opposites in the same hand. What lands on skin is less a recreation of an era and more its emotional residue. The softness that came right before the crack. The opening is dense, not bright, with saffron's metallic edge and rose already smudged by spice before either fully announces itself.
The rose-and-saffron opening is where this fragrance sets its terms. Rose arrives already smudged by spice, refusing to behave like a pretty bouquet. In lesser hands, rose announces itself loudly. Here it's quieter, stained by saffron's amber edge before either has fully announced itself. The saffron prickles first, metallic and slightly bitter, and the rose threads through it almost immediately, not sweet but warm, the kind of rose that smells like it's already been worn by someone.
The evolution
The opening belongs to saffron. It prickles on the skin, metallic, almost chemical in its sharpness, then softens as the rose lifts through it. What starts as spice becomes petal, then both blur into something closer to warm stone. The saffron threads through the rose almost immediately, not bright but warm, the kind of rose that smells like it's already been worn by someone. The opening is dense, not bright. Then the woods arrive, and this is the phase that seems to belong to a different fragrance than where it began, darker, more deliberate, less floral. Cashmere wood has a tactile quality, the way light cotton feels on cool air, but here it lands heavier, pulled down by oud. The oud itself is a quiet, almost paper-thin version, more suggestion than statement. Cedarwood adds a dry, pencil-shaving grain beneath, grounding the heart with its dry, woody weight.
Cultural impact
As a 2025 release from a small niche house, Capsule 1990 trades on nostalgia without leaning into literal period cues. There's no vanilla-heavy retro sweetness here, no obvious decade shout-outs in the bottle or the marketing. Instead the composition translates the 1990s into something more textured, a decade read through the contradiction between fragility and strength, between what was shown on the surface and what was actually breaking underneath.
