The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Hecate takes its name from the Greek goddess of the crossroads, magic, and the liminal space between worlds. In mythology she presides over thresholds, over the places where one state of being becomes another. Anna Sivacheva composed this 2018 release for Aroma d'Anima, a brand whose catalogue draws on mythological and classical figures for its naming conventions. The fragrance sits within a framework where each release corresponds to a deity or archetype, and Hecate occupies the threshold figure, the one who stands between worlds. That tension between clarity and darkness, between the civilized surface and what lives underneath, runs straight through the composition.
What's interesting here is the structural choice. The opening reads almost cheerful: bergamot, grapefruit, blackcurrant, pomelo, bright and generous on the initial spray. Then the heart drops into something far stranger. Sage and wormwood bring bitterness, a green medicinal quality that cools the citrus away. Nag champa and champaca bring incense sweetness, a resinous warmth that feels ancient and slightly smoky. Ylang-ylang adds tropical density, almost overripe. Juniper cuts through all of it with a dry, peppery edge that keeps the accord from collapsing into pure sweetness.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are almost disorienting in their brightness. Bergamot and grapefruit arrive sharp, pomelo sweet behind them, blackcurrant adding a dark fruit edge that gives the citrus a bruised undertone before the florals even appear. Then sage hits, green and slightly bitter, and the temperature changes. Wormwood pulls the composition somewhere medicinal, almost camphorated, cooling the skin and shifting the mood. Rose and jasmine arrive not as a bouquet but as single petals dropped into something herbal and unsettled. Nag champa brings incense smoke, and the champaca adds a warmer, almost honeyed resin that wraps around the green bitterness. Ylang-ylang rounds it with something tropical and dense, dense enough to weigh down the lighter florals. Juniper needles through with a woody sharpness that keeps everything from going soft.
Cultural impact
Hecate contributes to Aroma d'Anima's archetype-driven mythology collection, where each release maps to a Greek deity or mythological figure, giving the brand a recognizable conceptual footprint. Peers within the same collection include fragrances referencing figures like Demeter and Persefona, and together they form a coherent mythological family that collectors tend to explore as a set rather than as isolated purchases. The 2018 launch introduced Hecate as the threshold figure, the guardian archetype, a goddess of transitions and crossroads, and that specific narrative gives the fragrance a distinct identity within the larger catalogue.
