The composition works because it refuses to overload. Two herbs up top, two materials at the heart, two anchors in the base. That's it. No crowding. The basil and thyme carry a green herbal brightness that anchors the opening and gives the scent its initial lift. By keeping the top green and clean, Barel sets up a contrast that makes the transition into the heart and base feel deliberate and paced rather than rushed.

The evolution

The first twenty minutes are all garden. Basil reads bright and slightly peppery, thyme underneath it adding a quiet medicinal edge, the kind of green that feels cut minutes ago. As that herbal lift fades, geranium enters with a soft rosy coolness, and the patchouli grounds everything into something earthier. Within the hour, the leather shows up, not as a sharp new-shoe note but as something older, darker, like the inside of a glove drawer. Oakmoss settles beneath it, giving the base a damp, mossy weight that keeps the whole thing from going flat. By hour four, the herbs are gone, the florals are a memory, and what remains is a warm leather-oakmoss drydown that sits close to the skin. It doesn't project much past that point, but it persists.
