The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Safari arrived in 2017 when Jacques Huclier set out to bottle the raw pulse of an African trek for Arabesque Perfumes, a Dubai-based house that translates Gulf heritage into modern narratives. The name evokes endless horizons, the heat of open plains and the thrill of a hunt. Huclier built the composition around contrasts: the cool clarity of citrus against the warmth of spice, the crispness of green herbs against the depth of woods. Working with Arabesque, he aimed to create something that felt both rooted in tradition and unmistakably contemporary, a fragrance that could travel from the desert to the city without losing its essential character.
The note selection reflects a deliberate philosophy of balance: bright citrus and herbal lavender at the opening prevent the heart from becoming overwhelming, while the musk-vanilla drydown ensures the spicier elements have room to shine. The whiskey and apple pairing was chosen to evoke warmth without heaviness, a combination that feels both contemporary and timeless. Geranium was included to add a green, slightly astringent quality that keeps the heart from becoming too sweet, while patchouli anchors everything with its earthy depth.
The evolution
The scent journey of Safari moves through carefully layered contrasts that reward patience. It begins with bergamot and lemon delivering immediate freshness, softened by lavender's herbal restraint. As the opening fades, the heart reveals its true nature: apple brings juicy sweetness, whiskey contributes warm boozy depth, and cinnamon adds a spiced edge that keeps things interesting. Geranium weaves through with a green floral note that prevents the heart from becoming too heavy. The transition to the drydown is gradual, with patchouli emerging first to ground the composition before musk and vanilla take over, creating a warm, Intimate finish that clings to skin without overwhelming.
Cultural impact
Since its 2017 release, Safari has earned a niche following among travelers and scent explorers who appreciate its blend of citrus vigor and smoky whiskey warmth. It often appears in community lists as a go‑to for evening wear in cooler climates, and its animalic black musk distinguishes it from more conventional oud‑centric Arabian offerings.
