The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name is Portuguese for "everything blue", but the scent is unmistakably Brazilian. Inspired by the caipirinha, Brazil's national cocktail, Everything Azul translates the drink's sharp citrus, raw cachaça, and brown sugar into fragrance. Perfumer Fanny Bal was working with Anima Vinci's vision of scent as emotional transformation, and the brief seems to have been simple: make the cocktail walk toward the ocean. The 2018 release drew attention at Pitti Fragranze for its distinctive approach to tropical and marine elements. The fragrance opens with an immediate citrus punch that feels both bright and aquatic, capturing that first moment of anticipation before the drink touches your lips.
What makes this composition unusual is the heart. Brown sugar and cachaça together create a gourmand note that reads as authentic, rum's sweetness without rum's heaviness. The marine element doesn't cool the composition; it deepens it. The combination of sugar and ocean atmosphere creates something that feels both warm and expansive. Vetiver anchors the base with an aromatic bitterness that prevents the sugar from taking over, while labdanum adds a resinous warmth that surfaces on the drydown. The result is a fragrance that moves between tropical and temperate without apology.
The evolution
The opening hits fast, lime, mandarin, orange arriving together in a burst that feels like afternoon light on water. There's no subtlety here. You're in the moment. The heart takes over as the citrus settles and brown sugar arrives, raw and unfiltered, the way you'd drink cachaça in a beach bar. The marine notes arrive like a breeze off the ocean. The base builds gradually. Amberwood and vanilla create warmth beneath the surface while vetiver adds that dry, slightly smoky quality that keeps everything grounded. Labdanum appears in the final act, adding a resinous depth that lingers after the initial brightness fades. On fabric, it stays close. On skin, it announces quietly then refuses to leave. By the next morning, there's still something there, a warm, sweet, slightly salty trace that smells nothing like the initial citrus punch. It's become something else entirely.
Cultural impact
Everything Azul occupies a distinctive space in the niche fragrance landscape. It drew attention at Pitti Fragranze 2018 for its unusual combination of Brazilian cocktail inspiration and marine atmosphere, a caipirinha fragrance that translates the citrus-rum-sugar combination into scent. The marine notes create an expansive quality that elevates the sweetness beyond typical gourmand territory. Wearers describe it as a caipirinha in liquid form, capturing the cocktail's most recognizable characteristics. It's become a signature fragrance for those seeking something outside typical seasonal or genre conventions.
