The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Vis entered the Angela Ciampagna lineup in 2023 as part of the Virtus collection. The name itself is Latin. Vis. For Angela Ciampagna, translating that concept into scent meant reaching for oud. The official description frames it as a majestic fragrance of oud, with a flowery and fruity rise that immediately becomes warm, animalic and spiced with black pepper. The opening is delicate. There is a softness in how the fruity notes present themselves, a tartness that feels almost shy. But the warmth builds quickly, the animalic character emerging with confidence, the black pepper arriving to add a spiced edge. The contrast is the point. What arrives delicate doesn't stay that way.
The Virtus collection exists. Vis is no exception. Its structure moves from a surprisingly accessible opening, raspberry and saffron, into a heart that doesn't apologize for being warm and animalic, before arriving at an oud that earns its place in the base. In most compositions where oud appears, it tends to arrive early, announcing itself with weight and presence from the start. In Vis, the sequencing differs. The oud waits.
The evolution
The opening announces itself with saffron, sharp and bright, its presence immediate and commanding. Raspberry sits underneath, keeping things soft, but the saffron doesn't let you forget it. Within minutes, black pepper arrives. This is the first transition. The fruity quality retreats as the spice pushes forward, and the composition begins to read as warm rather than sweet. The heart is where sandalwood and cinnamon find each other. Creamy and spiced, this is the comfortable middle passage, the bridge between the delicate opening and what comes next. As the heart begins to settle, the base gradually makes its presence known. The drydown belongs to oud and cypriol. The oud is resinous, animalic, unapologetic. Peru balsam adds a sticky warmth. There's something almost wild in the drydown, the kind of scent that clings to skin and tells you exactly what it is.
Cultural impact
Vis combines a gentle opening with an assertive drydown, making it a natural conversation piece. The oud-forward base places it alongside other serious oud compositions in the independent fragrance world. The brand has shown work at niche events like Notes Shanghai. Its combination of delicate top notes that evolve into something bolder reflects a particular approach to fragrance construction, one that invites wearers to experience the full arc of the composition rather than encountering everything at once.
