The beginning
Citrusy Magnolia arrived in 2024 as part of Angel Schlesser's Les Eaux d'un Instant collection. The perfumer, Nathalie Lorson of DSM-Firmenich, approached the composition with characteristic restraint, pairing the obvious (citrus, magnolia) with the unexpected (Himalayan salt, Helvetolide). The pairing works because neither element overwhelms the other. The citrus stays sharp without turning sour, the magnolia stays creamy without going heavy, and the salt threads through both, adding a cool mineral edge that keeps the whole thing lifted. Helvetolide, a synthetic molecule characterized by its particular persistence, holds everything in place without making itself obvious.

The Himalayan salt note plays a similar role, mineral and cool, threading through the composition rather than sitting on top of it. The first thirty minutes are almost fizzy. Blackcurrant and Italian lemon collide at the opening, with the salt sitting underneath, giving everything a slight mineral edge. It reads bright, almost sharp, with a green undertone that cuts through the fruit. This isn't a quiet entrance. Then the handoff. The citrus recedes and orange blossom absolute begins to bloom alongside Southern magnolia, thick and almost waxy, the kind of white floral that holds the center of the composition for hours. By the third hour, you're sitting in the magnolia-cedar-sandalwood base, with Ambrox lending a warm ambergris haze around the edges. The magnolia stays present throughout, never fully ceding ground to the woods beneath it, so the drydown reads as creamy-woody rather than purely dry.
