The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Urban arrived in 2022 from perfumer Théo Belmas and Alfred Ritchy. Bergamot, pink pepper, and rose form the opening. The heart shifts into patchouli and jasmine. The fragrance develops on skin with a drydown featuring oakmoss, amber, and musk. The composition moves from bright citrus and spice through rich floral notes to an earthy, resinous base. It's a scent that doesn't demand attention. It simply lingers.
The structure here is classic chypre, a pyramid built on the tension between citrus brightness and mossy depth. The bergamot opens with presence. The pink pepper adds complexity without sharpness. The oakmoss in the base provides the green, earthy depth characteristic of the chypre family. Patchouli sits in the heart with its characteristic earthiness, camphoraceous quality, and woody nature. Jasmine offers creaminess and subtle animalic depth. These elements create a cohesive whole.
The evolution
The opening features bergamot and pink pepper alongside rose. The citrus and spice create the initial impression before the florals take their place. Around the midpoint of wear, the composition transitions as patchouli becomes more apparent. The drydown reveals oakmoss with its green, bitter quality. Amber adds warmth to the base. Musk provides the final layer, remaining present on skin for extended wear.
Cultural impact
Urban occupies a distinct space in the fragrance landscape. It appeals to those who appreciate chypre structures and oakmoss-forward compositions. The patchouli presence adds depth and character. It stands apart from fresher, lighter options available. The scent offers something different for those seeking complexity over simplicity.
