The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
On Monaco's Larvotto Beach, Alfred Ritchy paused. The sea breeze carried the salt-and-radiance of a Mediterranean afternoon, and he wanted to bottle it. The result is Larvotto, a fragrance built around sparkling mandarin and aromatic cedar, representing the breezy elegance of the Riviera's most iconic shore. Théo Belmas translated that moment into scent: mandarin and bergamot for the sunlit sea breeze, cedar and thyme for the rocky coast, ambergris and musk for the warmth of sun-warmed skin. Wear it. Don't just smell it. The mandarin opens with a bright, almost translucent quality that feels like sunlight refracting through water. Cedar arrives to ground it, lending a dry, slightly resinous character that evokes weathered driftwood.
What makes this composition work is the ambergris. In most fragrances it reads as a supporting player, a quiet marine note. Here it becomes the spine of the drydown, lending an animalic intimacy that contrasts sharply with the sparkling citrus opening. The blackcurrant is another smart choice. It adds a tartness that prevents the bergamot and mandarin from reading as generic citrus, giving the top a specificity that keeps it from disappearing too quickly. Cardamom appears in the heart as a subtle spiced warmth, threading through the cedar without announcing itself. The result is a fragrance that feels both coastal and grounded, bright and intimate.
The evolution
The opening is immediate. Mandarin, bergamot, and blackcurrant arrive together with an effervescence that reads as distinctly Mediterranean. The blackcurrant fades first, leaving the mandarin and bergamot to carry the next phase. By the time the heart develops, the energy has shifted from sparkling to grounded. Cedar and thyme take over, with cardamom appearing as a quiet spiced warmth threading through the composition. The drydown is where this fragrance earns its keep. Ambergris arrives with its animalic, slightly salty character, creating an intimacy that feels almost skin-close. Patchouli and musk form the final layer, soft and earthy, holding close without overwhelming. The longevity is above average, with reviewers consistently rating it 8.2 out of 10 for how long it lasts. The next morning, a faint trace of cedar and musk remains, close and warm against the skin.
Cultural impact
The 2023 release enters a category defined by Mediterranean-inspired fragrances. Wearers describe it as the fragrance for someone who walks into a room and doesn't need to announce themselves. The scent has earned a loyal following among enthusiasts who appreciate its nuanced citrus-and-ambergris tension. Citrus, fruity, woody, aromatic, fresh spicy, musky, powdery, animalic, amber. The fragrance occupies an interesting space in the niche market, neither aggressively bold nor politely forgettable.
