The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
New York launched in 2020, with Nicolas Beaulieu credited as the perfumer behind the composition. The Art Collection, Al-Jazeera Perfumes' line of place-named scents, includes New York alongside sister compositions that trace Doha, Granada, Venice, and Marrakech. The official description reads as an ode to the American metropolis. Brillance and grandeur, contemporary heritage, the unique spirit of a place. Beaulieu translated that energy into a woody aromatic that reads more like everyday wear than spectacle. The opening cuts through with citrus brightness, the herbal heart settles into something composed, and the base delivers a dry woody finish that grounds the whole composition.
What makes the composition worth pausing on is the friction between fruit and structure. Lemon and green apple open bright and almost impulsive, but the heart pulls hard toward black pepper, basil, and clary sage. That herbal, aromatic core keeps the sweetness honest. The base lands on cypress, patchouli, and sandalwood, three materials that share a dry, architectural quality. The whole thing reads like a citrus note that refused to stay light.
The evolution
The first minutes are the loudest. Lemon, green apple, and a burst of generic fruit sweetness that fills the air around the wrist. It announces itself. Then the herbs arrive, basil first, then clary sage, and the pepper starts its slow burn underneath. This is where the fragrance stops being a fruity opening and starts being something you actually wear. The drydown is where it earns its keep. Cypress and sandalwood take over, patchouli threading through the bottom, and the whole composition goes dry, slightly smoky, grounded. The sillage softens as the hours pass, but the wood notes keep their shape, and the skin warms into something quieter and more personal.
Cultural impact
New York sits within Al-Jazeera's Art Collection, a series of place-named compositions that interpret cities and landscapes through scent. The fragrance presents a clean woody aromatic profile with an herbal heart and a sandalwood-anchored base. Fragrantica's seasonal voting places it strongest in warmer months, with summer and spring drawing higher engagement than fall or winter, and day wear outpolling night wear significantly. This gives the scent a lighter, more casual orientation in how wearers tend to reach for it.
