The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Santorini arrived in 2022 from Al-Jazeera Perfumes, created by Jean-Louis Sieuzac. The composition opens with the richness of saffron and the spice of cardamom, their warmth anchored by the bright, metallic quality of pink pepper. As the top notes settle, lavender and orris move into the foreground, introducing herbal and powdery floral facets that shift the fragrance toward something cooler and more elegant. Cypriol provides earthy, tarry depth that steadies the heart before myrrh and tonka arrive in the base, wrapping the composition in warm resin and subtle sweetness. The oud lingers quietly, adding woody warmth that stays close to the skin. The overall effect moves from bright and assertive to cool and refined, with a lasting drydown that feels both modern and timeless.
The pyramid resolves through contrast rather than harmony. The opening leans warm and mineral, saffron's resinous richness, cardamom's spice, pink pepper's bright metallic edge. Then the heart introduces lavender and orris. Lavender carries an herbal quality that provides balance against the spice. Orris root adds a powdery, violet-like floral that introduces a different texture to the composition. Cypriol rounds the heart with an earthy, slightly tarry depth that anchors everything before the base arrives.
The evolution
Application brings an event. Pink pepper and cardamom arrive together, sharp and immediate, the kind of opening that makes you lean in. Saffron follows, bringing warmth that feels almost leathery against the pepper's brightness. This phase is assertive. The transition begins as the opening notes begin to settle. The heat softens without disappearing, becoming mineral rather than sharp. This is the moment the fragrance earns its name. Orris arrives as the composition shifts, adding powdery floral elegance that prevents the fragrance from reading as purely masculine. The heart holds, shifting slowly. The drydown is where Santorini becomes personal. Myrrh introduces a warm resinous quality that the tonka bean sweetens subtly. The oud is present but quiet, providing a soft, woody warmth that lingers close to the skin. The final hours smell like warm fabric and the memory of sun.
Cultural impact
Santorini draws from a Greek landscape but renders it through a sensibility shaped by warm, resinous, unapologetically rich materials. The fragrance has a distinctive character that sets it apart. The opening is assertive and immediate. The drydown is where it truly shines, developing into something softer and more complex that gradually reveals its depth. This progression from bold beginning to intimate finish defines the fragrance's character.
