#Self[ie] Black was released in 2022, composed by perfumer Marion Costero as part of the #Self[ie] line. Where the collection leans into contemporary mood-based fragrance, #Black pulls a different lever. Costero stripped the formula down to three notes and let them argue. Melon, patchouli, vetiver. That minimalism is the point, and the restraint shapes everything that follows on skin. The opening burst is cool and sweet, a slice of melon that hasn't sat long enough to bruise. The patchouli rolls in underneath, dry and resinous, giving the composition a darker backbone. Vetiver sits at the base, grassy and smoky, rooting the whole thing in earth.
What makes this composition worth talking about is the contrast at its center. Melon is sweet, dewy, almost playful, the kind of note that conjures fruit on a warm afternoon. Patchouli is resinous, dry, a little brooding, carrying the kind of depth that anchors heavier fragrances.
