The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Amber Jobin created Saffron in 2016 as a tribute to her mother, capturing the duality of nurture and strength that defined their relationship. The fragrance reflects her understanding of how scent can serve as both armor and comfort, honoring a woman who gave her both her name and her resilience. Aether Arts Perfume, founded in Boulder, Colorado in 2012, approaches fragrance as a visual medium, and Saffron embodies this philosophy with its carefully curated note journey.
The philosophy behind Saffron rests on the tension between warmth and edge. Saffron provides the aromatic backbone, a note that carries both cultural weight and olfactory complexity. Pink pepper and turmeric amplify its more interesting qualities without diluting them. The peach, jasmine, and ylang-ylang heart exists to provide contrast, ensuring the spice never overwhelms but instead invites. The drydown, with its mix of amber, hazelnut, suede, vanilla, and tobacco, represents a meditation on comfort and texture. Tog ether, these notes create a fragrance that feels simultaneously Intimate and bold, suitable for someone who values scent as a form of self-expression rather than mere presence.
The evolution
The journey of Saffron begins with saffron absolute taking center stage, its characteristic spice and slight medicinal edge softened by the citrus-like sparkle of pink pepper and the grounded warmth of turmeric. As the scent moves into its heart phase, peach arrives with a ripe, natural sweetness that feels like sunlight, while jasmine and ylang-ylang intertwine to create a floral complexity that is both sensual and slightly exotic. The drydown marks a transition from brightness to depth, with amber providing a resinous warmth that feels almost like an embrace. Hazelnut contributes a roasted, nutty quality that adds texture, tobacco brings a quiet smokiness and dryness, suede offers a soft material richness, and vanilla rounds everything with a subtle sweetness. Saffron returns in the base, its spice now warmed and cushioned by everything around it, creating a complete circle from opening to close.
Cultural impact
Named a Scent Story Finalist at the 2017 Art & Olfaction Awards, Saffron quickly became a reference point for perfume‑heads seeking a leather‑gourmand that feels personal. Wearers often liken its drydown to slipping into a well‑worn leather jacket infused with the warmth of a kitchen’s vanilla‑hazelnut bake. Its blend of spice and sweet has sparked conversation on forums, positioning it as a modern homage to vintage oriental compositions.
