The beginning
8 Jewels Tea was composed by Elena Markova and released in 2017, carrying the distinct perspective that defines her work for Acidica Perfumes. The fragrance takes its name from Ba Bao Cha, a traditional Chinese blend whose eight ingredients, green tea, cane sugar, fruit, seeds, berries, and citrus peel, are associated in legend with the eight characters of Buddhism and the eight jewels drawn from Chinese folklore. Markova translated that storied herbal brew into a composition built around the brewed moment, when steeped green tea meets softened fruit and sugar and the whole thing reads less like a drink on the tongue and more like the memory of one held in the air.
What makes 8 Jewels Tea interesting is its deliberate use of a synthetic green tea molecule rather than a purely natural accord. Most teas in Acidica's broader tea collection rely on 100% naturals; this one steps outside that approach, letting the green tea read as luminous, slightly translucent, and cool rather than grassy or steeped. That choice lets osmanthus and goji berries glow brighter against it. The result feels cleaner, sharper, more like a white porcelain cup than a ceramic mug. Cane sugar holds the sweetness, chrysanthemum grounds the floral, and the whole composition balances on the line between beverage and botanical.
The evolution
The opening reads cool and clear, green tea coming forward first with an almost watery brightness, catching light the way steeped leaves do in a glass pot. Goji berry sits close behind, tart and faintly sweet, lending the opening a lifted fruitiness that keeps the green tea from feeling austere. As the composition breathes, osmanthus begins to surface, bringing its apricot-skin warmth, gentle and never syrupy, softening the cool edges that the green tea laid down. Cane sugar settles in gradually, rounding the sharper facets and giving the blend a quiet sweetness that reads as warmth rather than gourmand. Chrysanthemum pushes forward in turn, dusty and slightly herbal, carrying a dry mineral quality that adds structure to what could otherwise drift into softness.
