The beginning
Man's Roots arrived in 2022 as a Ynepsie composition from perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour, conceived as a study in masculine grounding. The name points to the vetiver, sandalwood, and sage that anchor the drydown, materials evoking the scent of soil after rain, the part of a man that doesn't wash off. The composition lays crispness across its surface and weight underneath, accessible but never shallow. Brightness rides above, roots settle below, and the contrast gives the fragrance its quiet architecture.
The layering underneath the freshness is what gives Man's Roots its depth. Duchaufour pairs green mandarin and bergamot with pink pepper, then drops the temperature with wormwood, lavender, and sage before settling into amberwood, sandalwood, vetiver, and musk. The lavender-wormwood-sage axis in the heart gives it a herbal seriousness that grounds the opening's lift. It reads cool and composed at the top, meditative in the middle, warm and slightly resinous at the base.
The evolution
The opening belongs to brightness. Bergamot, lemon, and green mandarin crackle with pink pepper giving them a subtle bite. Nothing aggressive, just clean and immediate. Then something shifts. The citrus softens and the herbal core takes over. Lavender and sage settle into a composed middle stretch where wormwood adds a faint bitter-green edge that keeps it from smelling like a bar of soap. After a while the vetiver and sandalwood begin to dominate, pulling the whole thing into warm, dry territory. The amberwood and musk keep it close to skin. Eventually it becomes a quiet, woody drydown, personal and close, projecting modestly before settling into a second-skin finish.

Man's Roots debuted as part of Ynepsie's launch at TFWA Cannes 2022, where the brand was introduced to the industry. Positioned alongside compositions like Chypre Cosmic and Ambre Magnetic, it leans toward the grounded, masculine end of the spectrum. Its aromatic-citrus structure gives it ties to classic territory, sharing a balance of freshness and earthiness with scents like Hermès Terre d'Hermès and Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Pamplelune. For wearers, it sits in a specific lane, polished enough for daily wear with enough vetiver depth to carry through the later hours.
