The beginning
Washington Tremlett launched in 2008 with a single intention: a fragrance that works as a companion, not a statement. The brief was powdery, soft, and enduring. Tuscan iris served as the anchor, earthy, violet-scented, the kind of root that carries weight. Rose and jasmine were added not to dominate but to lift. The goal was never an entrance. It was a presence that stays.
Iris root requires patience. The rhizomes must cure for years before they yield their scent, and the quality of the source determines everything. Washington Tremlett chose Tuscan iris from the Val d'Orcia region, a locale known for high-grade material with that distinctive earthy-violet character. Bulgarian rose adds sweetness without lifting the composition too far skyward. Heliotrope contributes an almond warmth that reinforces the powder. The result is a fragrance where violet and powder seem to be the same thing, even though no violet leaf appears in the formula.
The evolution
The opening arrives in layers: Bulgarian rose and jasmine together, jasmine fading faster, rose holding its ground. Within the first hour, the iris takes over completely. This is not a gradual transition, it arrives, asserts itself, and settles. Heliotrope and lily of the valley layer in, creating a powder-soft heart that deepens rather than shifts. The drydown introduces white musk alongside vanilla and tonka bean, a warm close that reads as skin-warm and intimate. Performance data suggests 8-10 hours on most people.
