The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Bella is the third chapter in Les Belles de Nina, Nina Ricci's collection of modern princesses. Nina (2006) and Luna (2016) each have their own distinct place within the collection, and Bella arrived in 2018 with its own identity: an acidic floral-fruity built around rhubarb and a Rose Jelly accord. The apple-shaped bottle is the collection's signature, and Bella's pop green colorway offers a different visual expression within the lineup. The ladybug and golden leaves on the cap add a touch of whimsy to the design.
The Rose Jelly accord is the conceptual heart here. Rose, freesia, and white musk layered together create something that reads as modern romantic femininity rather than old-fashioned damsel energy. Combined with the rhubarb accord's tart-sweet-green structure, the composition has a layered complexity that rewards attention. The rhubarb never becomes shrill, the sweetness never becomes cloying, and the florals never overpower. It's a composition that knows exactly what it wants to be.
The evolution
The opening is tart and bright. Rhubarb, green mandarin, and lemon arrive together, delivering an acidic punch that lasts about an hour. The lemon fades first, leaving the rhubarb and green mandarin to set up the transition. Then the florals arrive. Freesia comes through first, delicate and slightly dewy, before the rose asserts itself. The rose here is powdery, not heavy. It softens the rhubarb's edge rather than competing with it. By the second hour, vanilla and white musk enter the base. The tartness recedes. What remains is warm, sweet, and close to the skin. The fragrance never projects aggressively. Instead, it lingers. The vanilla and white musk outlast everything else, creating a gentle dry-down that stays close to the skin.
Cultural impact
Bella fits into the Les Belles de Nina collection alongside Nina and Luna, representing the third chapter in a line of modern princesses. Introduced in 2018, the rhubarb note distinguishes this fragrance from more conventional sweet florals, giving it a distinctive tart edge within the fruity-floral category. It's executing a familiar concept with precision and personality.
