The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2016, perfumer Jérôme Epinette crafted Do Not Disturb for Vilhelm Parfumerie, a powdery iris-forward scent with an earthy backbone that feels sophisticated, slightly aloof, and unexpectedly warm underneath. The composition opens with a quiet, bitter-green carrot seed note that grounds the pepper's sparkle before it can become superficial, giving the fragrance a sense of depth from the first spray. As the top notes settle, the iris takes center stage, revealing its powdery precision and that violet-like quality that makes the scent feel private rather than performative. The drydown extends for hours, the ambroxan keeping the fragrance close to the skin where it waits to be discovered rather than announcing itself.
The carrot seed in the opening is the surprise, a quiet, bitter-green note that grounds the pepper's sparkle before it can become superficial. It gives the fragrance a sense of depth from the first spray, as if the scent has already been wearing for an hour before you arrived. The ambroxan in the base does something similar: it extends the drydown for hours without projecting loudly, creating a subtle closeness that makes the fragrance feel intimate.
The evolution
The opening sparkles, pink and black pepper creating a bright, slightly tart entrance that lasts about twenty minutes. Then the iris arrives, and everything slows down. The carrot seed grounds the transition, adding an earthy, slightly bitter quality that prevents the floral heart from feeling delicate. Jasmine softens the iris without diluting it, creating a white floral warmth that carries through the heart phase. The drydown is where patchouli earns its place, earthy and grounding but surprisingly restrained, never heavy. White musk and ambroxan create a skin-like warmth that lingers for hours. The sillage moderates after the first hour, becoming intimate rather than announced. This is a fragrance that stays close, the kind you catch yourself, not the kind that precedes you into a room.
Cultural impact
Wearers describe Do Not Disturb as the scent of someone who doesn't need to announce themselves. Intriguing and unique, it earns praise for its layering and originality, with longevity that extends well beyond a typical workday. The powdery iris and patchouli combination creates something both elegant and unconventional, a fragrance that intrigues with its unexpected warmth and quiet confidence. Those who wear it appreciate that it stays close to the skin, revealing itself gradually rather than making an immediate statement.
