The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Sweet entered the Ellis Brooklyn collection in 2020, conceived as a thoughtful response to the question of what sweetness in modern fragrance can mean. Anne Flipo, known for her work across luxury and accessible markets, approached the brief with a commitment to balancing approachability with sophistication. The goal was not to create another sugary confection, but to translate sweetness into something that rewards sustained attention. The brand's emphasis on modern elegance and unexpected combinations shaped the direction from the start, pushing toward a composition that could feel both familiar and surprising on the same wearing.
The note selection reflects a deliberate philosophy: using pear and violet as recognizably pleasant anchors, then supporting them with materials that add depth without demanding attention. Ambrette and orris root operate quietly in the background, providing structure and nuance that distinguish Sweet from straightforward fruity-florals. The marshmallow, white amber, and cashmeran drydown ensures the fragrance finishes on warmth and comfort rather than fading into forgettability. This note progression serves the wearer's experience throughout the day, from bright opening to lingering, intimate close.
The evolution
The opening act makes an impression immediately, with pear providing bright, juicy sweetness and bergamot cutting through with citrus clarity. Ambrette introduces a quiet, musky softness that keeps the top from reading as purely fruity. As the fragrance develops, the heart reveals its complexity. Orris root takes center stage, bringing powdery, slightly earthy elegance that reframes the sweetness from simple fruit toward something more nuanced. Violet and heliotrope layer in delicate floral softness, creating a mid-section that feels both intimate and refined. The drydown marks a shift toward warmth and comfort. Marshmallow provides edible, warm sweetness that wraps around the lingering florals. White amber adds creamy depth, while cashmeran delivers a velvety, skin-close finish that extends wear well beyond the initial hours.
Cultural impact
Sweet occupies a distinct corner of the sweet fragrance conversation. Where many sweet fragrances in this genre lean into vanilla, caramel, or chocolate, Ellis Brooklyn made a different choice with Sweet. The Iris (Orris) at the heart elevates it from pure gourmand to something that reads as more nuanced. The powdery floral backbone provides a counterpoint to all that sweetness, keeping the fragrance from becoming one-dimensional. The result is something that feels both generous and composed, a sweet fragrance with refinement rather than indulgence.
