The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
London Funk was born from a vivid tableau imagined by perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour for Vilhelm Parfumerie's 2021 line-up. The brief called for a trippy London afternoon: the sharp crack of a wooden cricket bat on leather, giggles spilling over rusting fabric, a five-o-clock buzz at Biba, Jim Morris. Duchaufour translated this into olfactory form by pairing the bright, herbal opening of bergamot, basil, juniper, and cardamom with a marine heart of driftwood and a dark fruitiness from blackcurrant, the drydown anchoring everything in cedarwood, sandalwood, vetiver, and mate, with ambergris adding that essential salty depth.
Duchaufour treats each material as a character in the narrative rather than merely a pleasant odor. The blackcurrant and driftwood pairing is unusual precisely because both carry a natural bitterness, the former fruity and the latter mineral, creating a heart that resists easy categorization. The drydown's woody and ambergris notes represent a deliberate commitment to depth and longevity, the mate providing a slightly unexpected tobacco-adjacent quality that grounds the composition in something smoky and contemplative rather than purely pleasant.
The evolution
The fragrance begins as a bracing London morning, all citrus and herbs cutting through imagined grey skies. As the top notes recede, the composition shifts toward the city's edge, where the Thames meets the land. Driftwood carries a genuine marine salinity, while blackcurrant adds a tart, slightly jammy darkness that evokes both fruit markets and gothic gardens. The drydown settles into late afternoon territory, the woods and mate building a smoky, bitter warmth that lingers long past sunset, ambergris providing the final suggestion of salt air and old leather.
Cultural impact
London Funk captures a slice of contemporary London culture, reflecting the city’s blend of historic charm and modern edge. Its green‑herbal opening evokes the bustling markets of Camden, while the aromatic juniper and basil recall the fresh air of Hyde Park on a spring morning. The heart’s woody ambergris notes mirror the industrial heritage of the Thames’ banks, grounding the fragrance in a sense of place. By marrying traditional British ingredients with avant‑garde composition, the perfume speaks to a generation that values both nostalgia and innovation. It has become a subtle anthem for creative professionals who navigate the city’s fast‑paced yet Intimate social scenes, reinforcing a collective identity that celebrates individuality within a shared urban narrative.
