The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Vilhelm Parfumerie built Sparkling Jo around the electric pulse of nightlife that Josephine Baker brought to Paris. Bertrand Duchaufour translated that energy into a composition that moves like a night out: champagne pop at the start, warmth building as the evening deepens, and a drydown that lingers like a memory. The brand keeps its focus on capturing specific moments in liquid, and Sparkling Jo represents the moment a room realizes it is being entertained.
The note structure reflects the arc of a night: bright and effervescent at the start, warm and engaging through the middle, and quietly present as things wind down. Champagne and Bergamot capture the opening toast. Pear and Ginger represent the warmth of good company. Oak and Musk embody the feeling of a night remembered fondly the next morning. Duchaufour uses each layer to move the wearer through that timeline.
The evolution
Champagne opens with an immediate effervescent pop. Bergamot and Juniper follow, bringing citrus brightness and a slight botanical edge. The heart introduces Pear and Ginger, a fruity-spicy pairing that feels warm and inviting. Ambrette adds a musky-creamy thread that connects to the drydown. Oak and Ambergris settle into the base, giving the composition weight without heaviness. Musk leaves a clean, lasting impression that carries the wearer through extended wear.
Cultural impact
Sparkling Jo occupies a specific corner of the modern fragrance landscape: celebratory without being loud, referencing a cultural icon without requiring the wearer to know their Josephine Baker history. The champagne aldehydes give the scent its effervescent character, but the Williams pear keeps it grounded in contemporary taste. It's the kind of scent that works equally well for someone discovering Baker's story through the fragrance or for someone who simply wants their perfume to feel like a good night out.
