The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Smooth Leather landed in 2021 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection, a line built around studying well-known compositions and reworking them in the brand's own register. This one traces directly to BDK Parfums' Crème de Cuir, a Parisian niche release celebrated for its supple, creamy leather character. The Dua Brand took that blueprint and rebalanced it: dialing down the leathery edge and lifting the cream, producing a softer, sweeter take on the source material. The result is a fragrance that nods to its inspiration without copying its posture, softer where the original is structured, sweeter where the original stays dry.
What's interesting here is the note architecture itself. Black pepper and pink pepper both appear in the composition, contributing a layered warmth that threads through the opening and the heart without ever overwhelming the softer materials. The heart layers white suede with sandalwood, creating a texture that reads more like fabric than skin, a brushed, tactile quality that softens the spice rather than sharpening it. The suede note is the pivot point, absorbing the pepper's heat and translating it into something dry and pliable.
The evolution
The opening is bright and confident, with pink pepper and black pepper leading the charge alongside mandarin and grapefruit that cut through underneath. That citrus pairing lifts the whole top into something lively, almost sparkling, making the fragrance feel brighter than the name suggests. Then the white suede arrives, and the whole composition shifts register. The pepper doesn't disappear, it recedes into the sandalwood, lending the heart a dry warmth that reads as skin rather than spice. The suede note wraps around the sandalwood, softening the wood's edges and giving the middle phase a velvety, almost powdery quality. As the hours pass, the birch shows up with a quiet smokiness, the vanilla rounds it out, and the musks take over from there, carrying the fragrance into its later life with a steady, skin-like warmth.
Cultural impact
Smooth Leather occupies a specific corner of the leather fragrance category, one defined by softness rather than severity. Where many leather compositions lean into smoke, tar, or animalic intensity, this one treats leather as a gentle material, more suede than saddle, more cream than crust. The use of white suede as a central note, rather than a traditional leather accord, gives it a different texture from most of its peers, one that reads as tactile and inviting rather than rugged or austere.
