The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Leech arrived in 2024 as part of The Dua Brand's Original Blend Collection, a limited release capped at 300 bottles. The composition opens with a burst of bergamot and grapefruit, the kind of citrus pairing that cuts through the heavier notes waiting underneath. Fresh, slightly tart, and quick to announce itself. From there, the heart pulls in amber, ginger, jasmine, and orris, each one adding a different temperature to the midphase. Ginger brings that warm, almost peppery flicker. Jasmine settles in cool and slightly indolic, giving the composition a fleshy sweetness that keeps it from feeling too clean. Orris works its powdery magic, softening every edge it touches and lending a subtle violet shadow that ties the spice and the florals together.
Leech earns its place in any discussion of ambitious gourmand compositions through the sheer density of its base. Caramel, coffee, vanilla, and whiskey sharing the same room is already a crowded table, and frankincense underneath ties everything together with a smoky, slightly liturgical weight. The opening citrus, bergamot and grapefruit, pulls double duty by lifting the top of the composition enough that the gourmand avalanche below doesn't smother the first few minutes on skin.
The evolution
The first 20 minutes belong to grapefruit and bergamot, bright and almost aggressive, with ginger starting to warm underneath like coals catching. Don't get comfortable. Around the 30-minute mark, the citrus recedes and jasmine plus orris move in, but they never feel floral in the traditional sense. The orris adds a powdery coolness while the ginger keeps building heat. By the end of hour two, the base has fully entered the conversation. Caramel arrives first, smooth and deliberate, then coffee grounds everything with a slight bitterness that prevents the sweetness from going cloying. Vanilla comes last, cushioned underneath rather than announced. The whiskey note isn't the loudest player, but it's the connective tissue, lending a boozy warmth that ties caramel to coffee to vanilla without any of them dominating. What lingers past hour six is the frankincense, slightly smoky, slightly sweet, holding the room long after the gourmand sweetness has softened. On fabric the next morning, it reads warmer and simpler, mostly vanilla with a faint coffee shadow.
Cultural impact
Leech arrived in 2024 as part of The Dua Brand's Original Blend Collection, a limited release capped at 300 bottles. Mahsam Raza, identified as the nose behind the composition, layered caramel, coffee, whiskey, and frankincense into a single dense base, a structural choice that immediately set the fragrance apart from conventional gourmand releases. The heart stacks orris, ginger, jasmine, and amber, with the iris-and-ginger pairing providing a powdery warmth that bridges the bright citrus opening and the heavy gourmand close.
