The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
His Echo Of Water arrived in 2024 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression line, a series that pulls recognizable scent DNA into a new format. The reference here is Davidoff's Echo, and Mahsam Raza composed this version for The Dua Brand, leaning harder into the chili-and-pepper bite while keeping the aquatic-woody spine intact. The result is a study in contrast: cool synthetics layered against warmer notes, with enough cedar-and-suede to anchor the thing when the waves recede. Raza's approach keeps the aquatic backbone from floating off course, anchoring it with wood and spice that gives the composition weight and a sharper edge.
What's interesting is the chili. Raza threads chili and black pepper right through the top, which means the fragrance doesn't read as a simple cooling splash. It reads as a cooling splash with a dare. The aldehydes carry a metallic, almost-glass flash, while the cedar-musk heart gives it a structural center most aquatic compositions skip entirely. The pepper doesn't smoke or char; it tightens, adding a dry, peppery register that makes the aquatic notes feel deliberate rather than accidental.
The evolution
The opening hits fast and bright. Aldehydes sharpen everything, making the aquatic notes read as cold glass, almost mineral. Chili and black pepper arrive early in the wear, adding heat without smoke. It's loud, almost fizzy, the kind of opening you smell before you see someone wearing it. As the top cools, cedar enters quietly, with musk behind it, and the composition settles into something softer, more skin-like. White suede gives it a polished, slightly powdery texture, like fresh linen in a warm room. The drydown takes over well into the wear: nutmeg warms the cedar, sandalwood smooths everything out, and the whole thing becomes a quiet, close-to-skin woody-musk that lingers through the rest of the day. The transition from fizzy brightness to warm wood feels inevitable, each phase folding into the next without losing the composition's core identity.
Cultural impact
His Echo Of Water stands out for how it handles the aquatic genre. The opening aldehydes lift the composition like sun catching on a lake, while the chili and black pepper twist keeps the aquatic theme from feeling dated or overly clean. Aquatic compositions can flatten into a single dimension of coolness, but the spice backbone here gives the fragrance personality and a sense of intention. The chili and pepper act as a counterweight to the aldehydes' brightness, pulling the composition toward something warmer and more complex.
