The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Elegance Of Jasmine & Rice arrived in 2025 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection, a 2025 release that draws its architecture from Mona di Orio's Dõjima. The connection is a quiet homage rather than a loud announcement. What remains is the same architectural idea: a textured dry note up top, a floral heart that doesn't compete, a base of warm resin and wood. On skin, the opening reads as a cool, starchy grain impression, almost like the moment dry rice meets warm air before any water is added. It carries a papery, slightly toasted quality that feels both edible and mineral, setting a restrained stage for what follows. As the jasmine begins to surface, it doesn't announce itself with indolic intensity.
The choice of ambrette as the opening bridge is doing more work than it seems. Ambrette carries a musky, slightly wine-like warmth that softens the starchiness of rice without drowning it. Nutmeg absolute adds a dry, almost pencil-shaving spice that keeps the rice from reading too literal, too kitchen. The clary sage absolute in the heart is the unsung hero, an herbaceous counterweight that prevents the jasmine and orris from collapsing into pure powder. Labdanum's smokiness in the base prevents the whole composition from floating away into florals. Each ingredient earns its place by what it stops the others from doing.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are the strangest part. Rice and nutmeg land simultaneously, dry and slightly savory, like a grain jar opened next to a spice rack. The nutmeg is brief, almost a flash, and then the orris starts pulling the whole thing toward powder. That's where the jasmine arrives, soapy and clean at first, then gaining warmth as the clary sage cuts underneath it. By the 90-minute mark the composition has settled into its real personality: jasmine and iris sitting on a bed of soft labdanum, with sandalwood arriving last to anchor everything. The drydown is the longest chapter, a quiet, skin-like warmth where the jasmine has lost its soapy edge and become something almost creamy. What stays on a sweater the next day is mostly sandalwood and a ghost of the rice, faint but unmistakable.
Cultural impact
Elegance Of Jasmine & Rice, released in 2025 by The Dua Brand, anchors a composition around a grain-and-floral pairing that feels both familiar and quietly unexpected. The combination of jasmine with a starchy, rice-like material creates a scent that reads as comforting in a way that doesn't rely on overt sweetness. On the opening, the grain impression gives the fragrance a dry, almost savory edge, like warm rice paper or a faintly toasted cereal note.
