The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Dua's SoHo is a 2023 entry in The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection, described as a homage to Bond No. 9's SoHo. The release captures the New York neighborhood's spirit through a considered arrangement of petitgrain, sweet orange, and cassis in the opening, followed by orange blossom, jasmine, and orris root at the center, and grounded by cedar, moss, amber, and vetiver beneath. The composition reads like an attempt to bottle SoHo's particular blend of grit and gloss, the kind of scent that feels like a loft conversion rather than a souvenir. There's an artful balance between the brighter citrus and fruit on top and the more contemplative florals at the heart, while the base notes bring a woody, slightly damp weight that keeps the whole thing anchored.
The orris root gives the floral middle a cool, powdery, almost suede-like finish that keeps the citrus and white florals from drifting too sweet. Pair that with the moss and vetiver in the base, and the fragrance avoids the trap of feeling like a straightforward citrus-floral. There's a damp, mineral undertow that makes it feel rooted in a specific place. The cassis adds a green-tart snap to the opening that the petitgrain alone couldn't deliver, and the cedar gives the drydown a clean, structural backbone instead of the usual amber sweetness.
The evolution
The opening is bright, almost tart. Cassis and orange do the talking, with petitgrain adding a green, slightly bitter edge that keeps things from going candy-sweet. As the minutes pass, the white florals arrive. Orange blossom and jasmine bloom through the citrus, but orris root is already pulling the whole thing toward something cooler and more powdery. The shift is subtle but real, the kind of gradual metamorphosis that rewards close attention rather than demanding it. Eventually, the florals step back and the base starts to take over. Cedar arrives first, clean and dry, then moss creeps in, giving the skin that just-rained-on-stone quality. Vetiver adds a quiet smokiness underneath. The amber doesn't announce itself; it just warms everything from below.
Cultural impact
Dua's SoHo sits in a specific lane within The Dua Brand's catalog: one of the house's neighborhood homages, aimed at wearers drawn to urban woody-florals without the price tag of the originals. The reference to Bond No. 9's SoHo positions it as an accessible gateway into that downtown-New-York scent archetype, the one built on orris, moss, and clean cedar. It appeals to people who want the feeling of a specific place, a specific kind of evening, without committing to a luxury-tier price. Within The Dua Brand's own lineup, it reads as one of the more refined and grounded entries, less about projection and more about atmosphere.
