The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Distant Star arrived in 2023 from The Dua Brand, and it functions as the brand's interpretation of Tiziana Terenzi's Telea. Perfumer Mahsam Raza, credited on this fragrance, built the composition around juicy pear up top, a sensual Bulgarian rose heart, and a dark woody base anchored by Cambodian oud, mahogany, and oak. In the broadest sense, the fragrance keeps the same architecture as the reference but substitutes its own raw materials to reach that destination. Distant Star lives squarely in the woody floral musk family, and it pulls rose and oud into the same orbit without either one surrendering. The pear gives the opening a clean sweetness that has no business being this close to oud, yet the combination holds.
There's a real gap between the pear at the top and the oud at the bottom, and the composition spends most of its energy trying to close it. You get sweetness first, a fruit bowl almost, before ylang-ylang and heliotrope start sweetening the rose into something confectionery. Then oud and vetiver arrive and ground the whole bouquet while Cambodian oud adds its dark, resinous weight to the base. Hawthorn appears somewhere in the middle stretch, threading through the florals and keeping the sweetness from collapsing into pure sugar.
The evolution
The first stretch is bright and disarming. Pear and citrus hit the skin with a clean, almost green sweetness, the kind of opening that makes someone lean closer without knowing why. Ylang-ylang and jasmine show up early, giving the pear a tropical, sunscreen-warm undertone before Bulgarian rose takes the wheel. The heart is a full bouquet, dense with heliotrope's powdery almond note, and the transition is gradual rather than abrupt. Oak and mahogany arrive quietly at first, then oud lands with real weight, woody, slightly medicinal, unmistakably dark. Vetiver threads through the whole drydown, adding a smoky, earthy edge that keeps the sweetness honest. As the hours pass, the composition sheds most of its floral top layer and what remains is musk, wood, and a shadow of the rose that started everything.
Cultural impact
Distant Star sits in an interesting place because it's officially inspired by Tiziana Terenzi's Telea, which means anyone familiar with the original will immediately recognize the reference and anyone who isn't will simply smell a well-built woody floral musk. The note combination itself is unusual enough to attract attention on its own, even without the Telea context: pear, Bulgarian rose, and Cambodian oud in the same composition is a bold structural choice. In practice, this is a fragrance for someone who wants a dark-woody base with a floral heart and doesn't mind that the opening runs sweet.
