The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Gothic Incense is a 2026 entry in The Different Company's Extraits Extrêmes collection, a five-fragrance series concentrated at over 50% for radical intensity. The perfumer is Serge de Oliveira, and the composition leans into its name without leaning into cliché. Gothic here means architecture and atmosphere, not costume. The brief was smoke, spice, and enough depth to earn the extrait designation. The opening registers as an immediate sensory collision: two peppers crackling against each other, faint green vegetal facets flickering beneath the heat, a sensation that fills the air around the wearer before settling onto skin. The concentration itself plays a role in how these notes present.
What makes the composition work is the restraint inside the boldness. Two peppers (black and pink) provide crackle and warmth without going culinary. The frankincense is rendered as an absolute, which gives it a dense, resinous body. And the cedar appears twice, once as burnt cedar in the heart, once as cedarwood in the base, a structural doubling that keeps the wood present from the first thirty minutes through the final drydown. The interplay between these materials is where the fragrance earns its complexity.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are loud and peppery, a confident, almost confrontational crackle of black and pink pepper with something green underneath. The frankincense absolute arrives by minute twenty, and that's when the temperature drops. It deepens. The burnt cedar introduces a charcoal edge, more fireplace than forest, and the smoke begins to feel architectural rather than atmospheric. After two hours the oakmoss wakes up, grounding everything in damp earth and bark, and the smoke settles into a quieter, more private register. Six hours in, the cedarwood is still doing its work, close to skin, slightly sweet from the resin interaction, like the ghost of the opening but stripped of noise. On fabric the next morning: warm spice and charred wood, faint but unmistakable.
Cultural impact
Gothic Incense sits in the Extraits Extrêmes collection, a five-fragrance series concentrated above 50%. The goth label reads more about architectural shadow than costume. It's a smoky, resinous profile that knows the incense genre without performing it, rendered in a format that rewards extended wear. The Extraits Extrêmes line itself signals a particular kind of intent: fragrances designed for those who want their perfume to register as a presence, not a suggestion. Gothic Incense fits that brief through its pepper-forward opening and its deep, almost meditative base of smoke, moss, and cedar.
