The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Alexandra Monet created Santo Incienso as part of The Different Company's Juste Chic collection, released in 2017. The name itself carries intention, Santo Incienso translates to sacred incense, while Sillage Sacré hints at a trail left behind. Palo Santo takes center stage here, serving as the emotional core of the entire composition. The fragrance opens with a wave of bright citrus, the essential oils shimmering with clarity before giving way to deeper aromatic layers. As the top notes recede, resinous warmth begins to emerge, wrapping around the sacred wood accord. The brand describes the scent as wild and mystical, translated into something wearable that speaks to the soul rather than just the senses.
What makes this composition interesting is the tension between luminous and grounded. Calabrian bergamot and petitgrain open with what the brand calls an irradiant, almost blinding light. Hedione arrives as a fresh breeze, letting the Palo Santo reveal its heat and take root on skin. Then the real contrast: Vetiver and Guaiac Wood echo to the earth below, while Incense and Myrrh turn toward the sky and beyond. Earth and heaven, held in the same bottle. The hedione is the bridge, that jasmine-derived molecule that keeps the smoke from becoming heavy, the wood from becoming dense. Without it, this would be a different fragrance entirely.
The evolution
The opening is citrus-bright, almost aggressive in its clarity. Calabrian bergamot and petitgrain announce themselves without apology. Then Hedione softens everything, letting Palo Santo emerge from behind the brightness like heat shimmering off warm stone. As the fragrance unfolds, the sacred woods remain grounded beneath the shifting brightness. The heart phase is where this fragrance earns its name. Incense and myrrh rise while the woody notes provide a steady foundation. Vetiver and Guaiac Wood complete the picture with earthy depth. Musk warms the skin's surface. The final phase settles into a present but understated trail, the kind of presence that lingers after you've left the room, inviting those who remain to wonder.
Cultural impact
Since its 2017 launch, Santo Incienso has attracted wearers seeking something genuinely different from mass-market options. This niche fragrance appeals to those who view scent as a form of artistic expression rather than mere decoration. Its cult following demonstrates growing appetite for fragrances that prioritize character over commercial appeal.
