The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Davana and cedar arrive first, bright and herbal, like movement catching light. There's a crispness here that announces itself immediately, a green bitterness that feels almost medicinal before it softens. Then oud, cypriol, and gurjun settle in, resinous, dark, complex. The combination doesn't lean into sweetness; there's a sharpness to these middle notes that refuses easy comfort. The base wraps it in amber and sandalwood, warm and long-lasting, a gradual softening that lets each element breathe. It's a fragrance that reads like desire caught between ornament and restraint, something that hints at grandeur without announcing it.
The note structure here subverts expectations. Davana, an herb with bitter, camphoraceous qualities, opens instead of the typical citrus or rose. That herbal quality carries through the heart, giving the oud and cypriol something to argue against rather than amplify. The base settles into sandalwood and amber, but the cedar has its own quiet presence throughout, a brightness that refuses to be buried under resin. Most Oriental fragrances reach for sweetness to balance their darker notes. Anarkali reaches for earth instead.
The evolution
Davana and cedar hit first, crisp, herbal, a little bitter. The freshness opens with an almost medicinal brightness before the heart gradually takes over. Oud dominates the middle act, dense and smoky, with gurjun balsam adding turpentine-sharp edges and cypriol bringing its earthy depth. Labdanum appears here too, lending a sticky, slightly animalic warmth that grounds the composition. After a few hours, the structure thins. What remains is amber, sandalwood, and a ghost of cedar, intimate, close to the skin, present without projecting. The drydown goes quiet but doesn't disappear. Sillage drops to moderate after the heart phase, leaving a scent that's felt more than announced.
Cultural impact
Anarkali arrived in 2015, a period when niche perfumery was paying closer attention to Indian attar traditions within Western compositional frameworks. Tabacora positioned itself at that intersection, and Anarkali represents the house's take on how traditional materials can yield contemporary results.
